Job Summary
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist II is responsible for the analysis of laboratory specimens and subsequent result reporting, following laboratory protocols and procedures. Under the guidance of Pathologists and the Laboratory Director/Manager, this position performs technical, analytical, clerical, and quality assurance tasks related to laboratory testing. Additionally, the role includes taking in-charge duties and assisting with projects that ensure the laboratory's overall quality and excellence. Clinical Laboratory Scientists must maintain current licensure and perform all work in compliance with applicable governmental regulations.
Key Responsibilities

Pre-Analytic Responsibilities:
-
Receives and processes patient specimens (e.g., urine, blood, spinal fluid).

Verifies proper specimen analysis for the correct patient and test procedure.
-
Identifies unacceptable specimen conditions and takes appropriate action per protocol.
-
Ensures proper specimen handling and identification throughout the testing process.
-
Assists in overseeing phlebotomists and lab assistants.
-
Troubleshoots issues related to patient preparation, specimen collection, and transportation.

Analytic Responsibilities:
-
Performs laboratory testing under CLIA guidelines, including waived, moderate, or high complexity tests.
-
Maintains and uses various laboratory equipment, performing necessary maintenance and calibrations.

Conducts quality control procedures and verifies acceptable QC values.
-
Troubleshoots instrument issues and coordinates with Biomed Engineering when needed.

Ensures inventory of reagents and supplies is sufficient and properly stored.
-
Prioritizes and organizes work to meet turnaround times and manages STAT requests promptly.

Functions as a resource for troubleshooting procedures and instrumentation.

Post-Analytic Responsibilities:

Verifies accuracy and clinical validity of test results before reporting.

Reports results within established turnaround times, ensuring critical values are communicated promptly.

Takes corrective actions on questionable results before reporting.

Safety Responsibilities:
-
Maintains a clean, organized work area and follows universal precautions.
-
Handles specimens, chemicals, and reagents safely, adhering to chemical hygiene policies.
-
Attends required safety training and demonstrates safe body mechanics to avoid injury.

Customer Service Responsibilities:
-
Performs job duties proactively and collaborates with colleagues in a supportive manner.

Communicates effectively with shift teams and provides excellent customer service.

Demonstrates professionalism in appearance, behavior, and telephone interactions.

Other Essential Job Duties:

Regularly reviews pending logs and resolves missing specimens/tests.
-
Identifies non-conformities in verified results and takes appropriate corrective action.

Proficiently uses laboratory and hospital computer systems and participates in ongoing learning.

Performs phlebotomy when required, after completing necessary training.
-
Actively supports laboratory management in developing new testing procedures.
-
Participates in research, conferences, and meetings to stay updated on industry trends.

Required Qualifications

Education:
-
Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or a related field.
-

Experience:
-
Minimum of one year of experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in a clinical lab setting.
-

Certifications/Licensure:
-
Current California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license.
-

Skills & Abilities:
-
Proficient in multiple clinical lab areas and/or an expert in one area.
-
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
-
Ability to use computer systems accurately and efficiently.
-
Ability to multitask, prioritize, and work well as part of a team.
-
Critical thinking skills and decisive judgment, especially in challenging situations.

Strong organizational skills and the ability to meet testing requirements in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications
-
Completion of a one-year Clinical Laboratory Scientist training program approved by the California Department of Public Health.
Certifications
-
Required: California Clinical Laboratory Scientist License.
